The Adhesive on My Product Isn't Sticking - Installation Tips

Pre-applied adhesive works great on properly prepared surfaces. If your product isn't sticking well, the surface likely needs additional preparation. Here's how to get a lasting bond.

Surface Preparation (Critical!)

1. Clean Thoroughly
Wipe the mounting surface with:

  • 50/50 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water, OR
  • A degreaser like Simple Green

Let it dry completely before applying.

2. Scuff Smooth/Glossy Surfaces
Plastic fenders and smooth surfaces need texture for adhesive to grip:

  • Lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper
  • Clean again after sanding to remove dust

3. Ensure Proper Temperature

  • Apply at room temperature (65-75°F / 18-24°C)
  • Cold temperatures reduce adhesive effectiveness
  • If the product was shipped in cold weather, let it warm up first

4. Apply Firm Pressure
Press firmly across the entire surface for 30+ seconds. Adhesive bonds strengthen over 24-72 hours.

Alternative Mounting Methods

For maximum durability, many customers use:

  • Automotive 3M double-sided tape – Stronger than standard adhesive
  • Small screws or rivets – Permanent mechanical fastening
  • Contact cement or super glue – For rubber-to-plastic bonds

If Adhesive Has Failed

If the adhesive backing has delaminated or was defective from the start (not a surface prep issue), contact us with your order number for a replacement.

Pro Tip

For items like mud flaps that experience vibration and weather, mechanical fasteners (screws or rivets) combined with adhesive provide the most reliable long-term hold.
